What is Craniosacral Therapy (CST)? cstsml
It is a gentle, hands-on manual based therapy with its origins in Osteopathy. However it has developed into its own distinct therapy due to its simple effectiveness and potential. It is based in science, the application of which is the Art of Craniosacral therapy.
Craniosacral Therapy provides:
• Whole body Evaluation System
• Release of Restrictions/tensions in the body
• Facilitation of homeostasis (body’s tendency to seek and maintain itself in balance or equilibrium,
• CST is led by client’s body

Craniosacral therapy requires:
– Listening with all of one’s senses,
– Deeper palpation than is usual with physio, but with a much lighter touch
– Awareness of Trauma, its effects and the Importance of being heard
– Following the body and its inherent wisdom

The Craniosacral system consists of Skull, Sacrum (tailbone) and Spinal Vertebrae which contain – CSF FLow
- Fascial membranes surrounding spinal cord and brain
- Fluid Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF)
- Nervous Systems
- Central Nervous System (CNS) controls muscles and glands
• Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) controls our state of being whether stressed or relaxed
• Sympathetic - Flight/Fight/Freeze(Overwhelm)
• Stress hormones and adrenaline release
• Parasympathetic - Rest & Digest
• Body heals when in parasympathetic mode, safe mode

Effects of Trauma can be physical/emotional/viral/chemical/electrical/neural…
• Fascia tightens
• Strain patterns/Holding/Movement patterns
• Neural patterns
• Emotions are molecules
• Tone increases – neural/fascial/muscular
• SNS Amps up
• PNS amps down

How does it differ from Physiotherapy?
• People generally find it very relaxing
• During the session the client is lying on the bed, very little movement if any takes place
• Clients remain fully clothed during a session
• Sometimes there is dialogue during a session, other times there is quiet as the body gently unwinds
• The effects may not manifest for a couple of days as the body continues to process the treatment
